How to Use the Redirect Checker
Paste any URL into the input field and click Check Redirects. The tool will follow the full redirect chain and display each hop with its HTTP status code.
Understanding the Results
Final Status
The HTTP status code of the last URL in the chain. A 200 OK means the destination page loaded successfully.
Total Hops
The number of redirects before reaching the final URL. Zero hops means no redirect — the URL serves content directly.
Healthy / Warning
Healthy means 2 or fewer hops and a 200 final status. Warning means too many hops or a non-200 final status.
Redirect Chain
A visual step-by-step breakdown of every URL and status code in the chain, from the original URL to the final destination.
HTTP Status Code Reference
| Code | Meaning | SEO Impact |
|---|---|---|
| 301 | Moved Permanently | Full link equity passes to destination |
| 302 | Found (Temporary) | Link equity may not fully transfer |
| 307 | Temporary Redirect | Same as 302 but method preserved |
| 308 | Permanent Redirect | Same as 301 but method preserved |
| 200 | OK | Page loads — no redirect |
| 404 | Not Found | Broken — fix immediately |

What is a redirect chain and why is it bad for SEO?
A redirect chain occurs when a URL redirects to another URL which then redirects to yet another URL. Each extra hop adds latency (typically 100–300ms), passes PageRank less efficiently, and can confuse crawlers. Google recommends keeping redirect chains to a single hop — direct the original URL straight to the final destination.
What is the difference between a 301 and 302 redirect?
A 301 redirect is permanent — it tells search engines to update their index and pass most link equity to the destination. A 302 redirect is temporary — it signals that the original URL should remain indexed and link equity may not fully transfer. For SEO, always use 301 redirects unless the redirect is genuinely temporary.
How many redirects are too many?
Google recommends a maximum of 5 hops in a redirect chain, but best practice is 1 or 0. Each hop slows page load time and can cause crawl budget waste. If your chain has more than 2 hops, consolidate them into a single direct redirect.
What does a redirect loop mean?
A redirect loop occurs when URL A redirects to URL B which redirects back to URL A (or through a chain that eventually loops). This causes an infinite redirect error in browsers and makes the page completely inaccessible. Fix by removing the circular redirect in your server configuration or CMS.
Does this redirect checker follow HTTPS redirects?
Yes. The tool follows all redirect types including HTTP to HTTPS redirects, www to non-www (or vice versa), path-based redirects, and domain changes. It captures every hop in the chain up to a maximum of 10 hops.
