How to Use the Character Counter

Paste or type your text into the input box. All six statistics update in real time as you type. To check against a specific platform limit, select the platform from the dropdown — the progress bar and status indicators update immediately.

What Each Statistic Measures

Characters (with spaces)

Total character count including every space, tab, and newline. This is what most platform limits measure — Twitter, Instagram bios, SMS, and meta descriptions all count spaces.

Characters (no spaces)

Total characters excluding whitespace. Useful when you need a pure symbol or letter count — for example, when a password policy requires at least N non-space characters.

Words

Total word count based on whitespace-separated tokens. Useful alongside character count for estimating reading time or checking academic requirements.

Lines

Number of lines in the text, counting each newline as a line break. Useful for checking multi-line form fields, code snippets, or formatted copy.

Sentences

Approximate sentence count, detected by periods, exclamation marks, and question marks. Useful for readability checks — aim for an average of 15–20 words per sentence in web copy.

Paragraphs

Blocks of text separated by one or more blank lines. Short paragraphs (2–4 sentences) improve readability on mobile screens and are favored by SEO best practices.

Platform Limit Indicators

The platform limit checker at the bottom of the widget shows a live progress bar and status indicator. The color coding works as follows:

Green

Under 90% of the platform limit. You have comfortable room.

Yellow

Between 90% and 100% of the limit. Getting close — review carefully.

Red

Over the limit. The text will be truncated or rejected by the platform.

SEO Character Limits You Should Know

Character count is one of the most actionable on-page SEO metrics because Google imposes hard display limits on the two most visible elements in search results: the title tag and the meta description. A title over 60 characters gets cut off in desktop SERPs, forcing Google to rewrite it or display an ellipsis. A meta description over 160 characters is similarly truncated, reducing the click-through rate because users cannot see the full value proposition.

Beyond search, character counts matter for every channel in a content distribution strategy. Tweets must stay under 280 characters. Instagram bios are capped at 150 characters. A single SMS segment is 160 characters — going over means the carrier splits the message into two billable segments. LinkedIn posts support up to 3,000 characters before the “see more” fold. Writing copy with these limits in mind before publishing saves revision time and prevents truncation surprises.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many characters can a Twitter / X post have?

A standard Twitter / X post (tweet) has a limit of 280 characters, including spaces and punctuation. URLs are always counted as 23 characters regardless of their actual length. Twitter Premium (X Premium) subscribers can post longer content, but the standard limit for free accounts remains 280 characters.

What is the ideal meta description length?

Google typically displays the first 155–160 characters of a meta description in search results. Anything longer gets truncated with an ellipsis. Aim for 140–160 characters to give Google flexibility while ensuring your key message is visible. Our character counter highlights when you exceed 160 characters so you can trim before publishing.

What is the recommended title tag length for SEO?

Google shows roughly 50–60 characters of a page title in desktop search results before truncating. Keeping your title tag under 60 characters ensures the full title is visible. More precisely, Google measures pixel width (around 600 pixels), but 60 characters is a reliable safe limit for most fonts.

Does the tool count characters including spaces?

Yes. The tool shows both 'Characters (with spaces)' and 'Characters (no spaces)' as separate stats. Most platform limits (Twitter, Instagram, SMS) count spaces as characters, so the with-spaces figure is what matters for those checks. The no-spaces count is useful for tasks like password length validation or certain character-based typesetting work.

Is there a limit on how much text I can paste?

No. All processing happens entirely in your browser using JavaScript, so the tool can handle text of any length — from a single word to a full novel — without sending data to any server. Performance stays fast even with very large documents because the calculations are lightweight and run locally.
