How the Auto-Save Works

Every time you type, a 1.5-second timer starts. When you stop typing, your notes are saved to localStorage. You'll see "Saved" with a green checkmark when the write completes. This means you don't need to hit Ctrl+S — it handles itself.

Come back tomorrow, open the same browser, and your notes are exactly where you left them. This works because localStorage persists across sessions, unlike sessionStorage which clears when you close the tab.

Downloading your notes

Click the "Download .txt" button to save a copy to your device. This creates a standard plain text file. Useful for archiving notes, sharing via email, or importing into other tools. The file is named notes.txt by default.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where are my notes saved?

Notes are saved in your browser's localStorage — a storage area that's local to your device and browser. They persist between sessions as long as you use the same browser on the same device and don't clear your browser data. Notes are never sent to any server; they stay entirely on your machine.

Are my notes private?

Yes. Everything stays on your device in localStorage. We don't have access to what you type, and no data is transmitted over the internet. That said, localStorage is accessible to any JavaScript running on this page, so treat it like a local text file — fine for notes, not for storing passwords or sensitive credentials.

What happens if I clear my browser data?

Clearing browser data (cache, cookies, site data) will erase locally stored notes. If you have important content, download it as a .txt file first using the Download button. There's no account-based sync, so the .txt file is the only backup option.

Is there a character or storage limit?

localStorage typically allows 5-10 MB per domain depending on the browser. That's several million characters — enough for any practical note-taking use case. You'll see a browser error in the console if you somehow hit the limit, but normal usage won't come close.
